Cindy Anderson

Cindy Anderson is the Regina Board of Education trustee for Subdivision 4 and has been for four terms, spanning the last 14 years. A mother of two and grandmother to three, Cindy has balanced her trustee role with a 46-year career in healthcare, 10 years in vascular and general surgery and the last 36 in otolaryngology.

Like many engaged and concerned parents, Cindy became involved in her school community. First, she joined the McDermid Community School Parent Association prior to the implementation of the School Community Councils in 2006. Cindy also served as the Robert Usher Collegiate Music Association President for two years, as well as serving for two years as the Robert Usher Collegiate School Community Council (SCC) Chairperson for two years.

Cindy worked with the Saskatchewan School Board Association (SSBA) to define the purpose of the new SCCs as the Government of Saskatchewan mandated that parent associations transition to SCCs. During this time, she volunteered in community associations, coaching T-ball and softball. Cindy’s commitment to students and school families was seen early on as she also served as the spokesperson for parents and community trying to prevent Robert Usher Collegiate from closing. That school closed in 2008. Cindy’s energy and advocacy for school families and for keeping schools open found a place as she was elected as a trustee to the Regina Board of Education in 2012.

Cindy has been active as a representative of the Regina Board of Education with the SSBA, serving as a member of the Educational Equity Committee and developing an approach for government to ensure equity in education. Further, as a representative for Saskatchewan public schools and in association with a trustee from the Regina Catholic Schools, Cindy used her healthcare expertise to advocate for and ensure all schools in Saskatchewan had an anaphylaxis policy.

In association with the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, Cindy represented her Board and the SSBA for over 10 years developing the Saskatchewan Alliance for Youth and Community Wellbeing surveys. The data from these surveys was used to create mental health and well-being programs for youth.

Cindy further served as the Chairperson of the SSBA’s Data Access Review Committee, looking at ethical conduct of research. She was also a member of the National Network on Student Health, which collaborated with the Canadian School Boards Association, working on safety and health for all students and staff across Canada. Cindy also assisted in initiating smartstudysask.com in association with Dr. Tarun Katapally.

At Regina Public Schools, Cindy, along with now Director Darren Boldt, helped launch the first Trustee-Student Forum. As an active trustee, Cindy continues with her hands-on participation with SCCs and other school-based activities and initiatives in her subdivision and across the division. “I will continue to work to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” Cindy Anderson says. “I will always be a strong advocate for education that is currently challenged by infrastructure and funding model issues. I love what I do and have built great relationships while working to promote and preserve public education!”
