MAY 31, 2021 -- Thomson Community School students in Kelsey Wolf’s Grades 3/4 class had the opportunity to learn about the uses of the moss bag and traditional approaches to parenting. This project took place over a four-week period during which time Elder Sharon Agecoutay shared her knowledge and memories on moss bags and cradle boards.
Students then created a replicated miniature cradle board using canvas, cardboard, leather and moss. The purpose of this project was for students to learn about traditional cultural teachings in a combination of activities designed to increase their self-awareness and self-confidence. Each moss bag included the student’s picture on the front and when opened, a series of affirming messages students had written to themselves were on the inside of the moss bag. These moss bags are displayed on the front bulletin board for all to admire.
