JUNE 6, 2023 — On Tuesday, May 9th, École Wilfrid Walker School held their first youth anti-racism symposium for students in Grades 5 to 8. The symposium was planned as a result of the Tell Them From Me survey that students completed at the beginning of the school year, as well as general student feedback to teachers and administration that indicated they wanted more education about racism.
The afternoon included 20-minute presentations, each on a specific topic: anti-Asian racism in Saskatchewan, newcomers to Regina, oppression and its effects on mental health, racism in sport, how to be an ally, and racism and law enforcement. A huge thank you to presenters Dr. Helen Chang (Chinese Cultural Society of Saskatchewan), Maya Dabo (Regina Open Door Society), Kam Favel (Family Services Regina), Sandra Favel (Regina Public Schools), Brayden Lenius (Saskatchewan Roughriders) and Denise Reavley (Regina Police Service). Thank you as well to all of the staff and students who made this event happen and participated with an open mind.
The symposium provided important information to students and an opportunity for them to ask questions of those who deal directly with racism in our community. “All staff and students should feel welcome and that they belong, and nobody should feel like they’re inferior,” said Principal Kelsey Panko. “The event was definitely a success, and we look forward to continuing our knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion.”
