In 2020, M.J. Coldwell School found itself with a new school administrator and a depleted School Community Council (SCC). With COVID, SCC meetings resorted to a Zoom meeting with Arts Ed. teacher Jolene Knelsen and the occasional parent peeking in to hear a report provided by the principal.
In the 2020-21 school year, the SCC was given a breath of enthusiasm and energy. Ashley Bullock and Kimberly Anderson joined the Zoom meetings and stepped in to support the school by accepting executive positions on the SCC. They were closely followed by Cheryl Morse and Breanne Sillinger as members at large, and Jolene Knelsen continued her long-standing support with the SCC.
In three short years, this small but mighty SCC has done remarkable things for the M.J. Coldwell School community. The SCC has run several successful fundraisers, including selling Dairy Queen cakes, Mom’s Pantry and Health Hunger Fun Lunches. The SCC is also currently putting the final touches on their biggest fundraiser yet, a 50/50 draw! All money raised has gone back into supporting M.J. Coldwell students and the school community.
The SCC has supported many initiatives and continues to support their strategic plan. Some of these purchases include physical education equipment for students, OSMOs (learning apps), the creation of a language wall, games and activities for indoor recesses, and supplementing field trips. The SCC has also helped organize and contribute to school events such as a community dance and barbecue, Staff Appreciation Week, Bring Your Backpack Night, and the winter carnival.
From shelving books in the library and helping out with the snack program, to running events at the track-and-field meet, the SCC is always there to lend a helping help!
The growth, resurgence and success of M.J. Coldwell’s SCC is due to these remarkable individuals. M.J. Coldwell is a better place because of them.
