March 18, 2024 - The Spark Reading Guide Program and Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan seeks volunteer reading guides in Regina to work one-on-one with elementary school students in grades 2-4 who are reading below grade level. Our volunteer Reading Guides follow a structured program to help the students improve their reading skills in comprehension, rate and fluency.
- You will be matched with two elementary school children and work together, one-on-one with each child, at their school, during the school day, providing reading support.
- You will be provided with resources that are kept at the school (with reading material at the child’s reading level).
- You will pick up your supplies and pick up the student from their classroom and find the designated quiet space to work together for 30 minutes, twice per week.
What is the commitment?
- Meet with each student for 30-minute sessions, twice per week over 8 weeks (16 total sessions offered per student).
- Although schedules are flexible, meeting the same 2 days per week is ideal.
What are the requirements to become a Spark Volunteer Reading Guide?
- Must be 18 years or older, have a minimum CLB 8 (for EAL speakers), complete volunteer application form, provide Criminal Security Check, and agree to Foundations Learning policies & procedures.
- Attend Spark volunteer orientation and training workshop (3.5 hours) and adhere to program expectations and guidelines. The next Spark training is on Wednesday, March 27th from 9:00-12:30pm.
- Maintain regular communication with school contact and Foundations’ project coordinators for support & evaluation purposes.
