Rise Against Racism

MARCH 19, 2025—March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre that occurred in South Africa on March 21, 1960, when 69 people were killed by police at a peaceful protest against apartheid. It is a day observed all around the world to focus attention on the issues of racism (personal and systemic), oppression, bias, white privilege, colonization, racial inequity/injustice, and truth and reconciliation. Canada was one of the first countries to support the UN initiative and launched its first annual campaign against racial discrimination in 1989.

Regina Public Schools acknowledges that racism, in all its forms, is embedded in society and commits to the elimination of racism and oppression by breaking down barriers that lead to inequitable outcomes (AP 110). Individually and collectively, we are all responsible for expanding our understanding of and commitment to inclusive, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices.
