Cindy Anderson has been a trustee of the Regina Board of Education for 14 years—that’s four terms. She notes that it would be impossible to shine the spotlight on only a couple of volunteers in her Subdivision 4. Instead, she would like to highlight her “small but mighty” School Community Councils (SCCs), highlighting some of the work they have achieved.
Schools in Subdivision 4 are Campus Regina Public, F.W. Johnson Collegiate, Henry Braun School, Judge Bryant School, Dr. George Ferguson School, Glen Elm Community School, Imperial Community School and McDermid Community School. Some of these schools’ SCCs sometimes have had or have as few as two members and a principal, but they have so many achievements to celebrate.
For instance, McDermid Community School’s SCC worked hard to get a new playground built, made possible by the Co-op Refinery Complex. They also organize the much-anticipated annual turkey meal at the school.
Imperial Community School’s ribbon skirt sewing bee and their turkey meals are well known in that community as are Glen Elm Community School’s Santa Store and Dr. George Ferguson School’s well-planned end-of-the-year celebrations. These events are all a result of dedicated SCC members. Henry Braun School has had a strong SCC that ensures all staff and students can take trips and are well equipped with school and sport supplies. F.W. Johnson Collegiate’s SCC ensures inclusive and accessible graduation celebrations year after year and offers many supports for students academically and in athletics.
According to Cindy Anderson, “My list of their commitments and achievements over my 14 years serving them could go on and on, but I will say that the members of the SCCs in my subdivision are, although sometimes small in numbers, huge in their dedication and inventiveness. All these SCC volunteers deserve to have the spotlight on them!”
